Which NIPT Test Should I Choose?

Basic, Advanced or Extended NIPT — Which Test Is Right for Me?

Choosing an NIPT test can be confusing.

Different NIPT options screen for different chromosomal conditions, and the test with the largest panel is not necessarily the appropriate choice for every pregnancy.

That is why our service begins with a free GP consultation.

You can speak with a doctor about your pregnancy, understand what each NIPT option screens for and ask questions before deciding whether you would like to proceed.

Basic NIPT — £375

Our Basic NIPT screens for the three principal trisomies commonly included within NIPT:
Trisomy 21 — Down syndrome
Down syndrome occurs when there is an additional copy of chromosome 21.
Trisomy 18 — Edwards syndrome
Edwards syndrome occurs when there is an additional copy of chromosome 18.
Trisomy 13 — Patau syndrome
Patau syndrome occurs when there is an additional copy of chromosome 13.
For many patients, screening for these three conditions is the principal reason for choosing NIPT.
Price: £375

Advanced NIPT — £425

Our Advanced NIPT includes screening for:
  • Trisomy 21 — Down syndrome
  • Trisomy 18 — Edwards syndrome
  • Trisomy 13 — Patau syndrome
  • Sex chromosome aneuploidies
Sex chromosome aneuploidies involve differences in the number of X or Y chromosomes.
The Advanced option therefore provides additional screening beyond the three principal trisomies included within the Basic test.
Price: £425

Extended NIPT — £495

Our Extended NIPT provides the broadest screening panel of our three options.
It includes:
  • Trisomy 21 — Down syndrome
  • Trisomy 18 — Edwards syndrome
  • Trisomy 13 — Patau syndrome
  • Sex chromosome aneuploidies
  • Six microdeletions
Microdeletions involve small missing sections of chromosomes.
Screening for rarer conditions requires particularly careful interpretation. The performance and predictive value of screening can vary substantially according to the condition being assessed and how uncommon that condition is.
The Extended panel should therefore not simply be viewed as “better” because it screens for more conditions.
Your GP can explain the differences and limitations before you decide whether broader screening is something you want.

Is the Most Expensive NIPT the Best?

Not necessarily.

It can be tempting to assume that the test screening for the greatest number of conditions must automatically be the best option.

NIPT does not work quite like that.

The performance of NIPT differs depending on the chromosomal condition being screened for. Screening for the common trisomies is not necessarily equivalent to screening for rarer conditions.

The likelihood that a higher-chance result represents an affected pregnancy can also differ according to the condition and its prevalence.

This is one reason we provide a free GP consultation before testing.

We can explain what each panel includes and its limitations so that you can decide what level of screening you are comfortable with.

What Does NIPT Actually Tell Me?

NIPT is a screening test.

It assesses whether there is a higher or lower chance of certain chromosomal conditions being present.

It does not provide a definitive diagnosis.

A higher-chance NIPT result may therefore require further clinical assessment and discussion about diagnostic testing.

Likewise, a lower-chance result substantially reduces the estimated chance of the conditions screened for but cannot completely exclude them.

Understanding this distinction is important before choosing any NIPT panel.

When Can I Have My NIPT Test?

NIPT can generally be performed from 10 weeks of pregnancy, subject to the particular test and your individual circumstances.
We will review your gestation before arranging your blood collection.
If you have not yet reached 10 weeks, you can still book your free GP consultation in advance and plan your test for the appropriate time.

Do I Need an Ultrasound Before Choosing My NIPT?

Not necessarily.
If you already have reliable information about your pregnancy and gestation, an additional ultrasound may not be required purely because you are arranging NIPT.
There are circumstances where a scan may be appropriate, particularly if dates are uncertain or there are other clinical considerations.
Your GP can discuss this with you before testing.

I cannot thank Dr Mac Sweeney enough for the care and support he gave my husband when he became seriously ill while we were away from home in London.
I was understandably very worried and was able to book an appointment within just a couple of hours. From the moment we met him, Dr Mac Sweeney was kind, reassuring, professional and genuinely caring. He took the time to listen, explained everything clearly, and made us feel that my husband was in very safe hands.
What impressed me most was that his care did not stop when we left the consultation. He followed up on several occasions to check on my husband's progress, prescribed more medicine and even went out of his way to provide a letter for our insurance company, which was incredibly helpful.
In a world where good service can sometimes feel hard to find, Dr Mac Sweeney demonstrated a level of compassion and personal attention that was truly exceptional. The fee was also very reasonable, especially given the time, care and support we received.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr Mac Sweeney to anyone needing medical assistance and will always be grateful for the kindness he showed to both of us. If I lived in London I would most certainly subscribe to his membership scheme so he could deal with all my family's medical needs.

We had a wonderful experience with Lydia at the Blackheath Clinic for a 3D/4D scan of our baby. She knew exactly what to do to help get our baby in a good position for us to see his face and we were blown away by the photos she gave us. A really moving experience in a beautiful, calm clinic

This is healthcare as it should be delivered. If life has left you weary and nostalgic for days gone by, book your next GP appointment at Blackheath Clinic.
As I entered the tastefully curated space, I encountered one of the rarest of things: a polite, smiling and genuinely welcoming receptionist. In fact, she was so warm and courteous that I briefly wondered whether I had wandered into an upmarket spa by mistake.
Then I met Dr Sweeney. He was charming, courteous, friendly and thoroughly professional, with the kind of bedside manner that reminds you what general practice can be at its best: attentive, humane and quietly confident. He came across as someone who takes real pride in his work and genuinely cares for his patients.
The whole experience felt like stepping back into a time when patients were warmly received and doctors truly doctored. As I was leaving, Dr Sweeney mentioned that he was off on a home visit. A GP doing a home visit in 2026? I was so astonished I nearly needed examining all over again.
Join this practice quickly before word gets out and the list fills up. This is care delivered by people who genuinely care, and that feels all too rare these days

I had such a wonderful experience with Dr Micha Plugaru. From the moment I walked in, she made me feel completely at ease. She is incredibly professional, kind, and genuinely caring, which made the whole experience so comfortable and reassuring.

I had lip filler and RRS Long Lasting skin boosters, and she took the time to explain everything clearly, answer all my questions, and ensure I felt confident about the treatments. Her attention to detail and gentle approach really stood out, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

Dr Micha Plugaru truly combines expertise with a warm, personal touch. I would highly recommend her to anyone considering aesthetic treatments — you’re in the safest and most caring hands.

How Do I Decide Between Basic, Advanced and Extended NIPT?

There is no single NIPT panel that is automatically the right choice for everybody.

The decision depends partly on what information you want from screening and your understanding of the advantages and limitations of broader panels.

A useful starting point is to consider:
Basic NIPT — £375

For patients principally seeking screening for trisomies 21, 18 and 13.

Advanced NIPT — £425

For patients who also wish to consider screening for sex chromosome aneuploidies.

Extended NIPT — £495

For patients considering broader screening that additionally includes six microdeletions.

Rather than asking you to make this choice from a website alone, you can discuss the options with one of our doctors first.

There is no charge for the consultation and no obligation to proceed.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Choosing an NIPT Test

What is the cheapest NIPT option?

Our Basic NIPT costs £375 and screens for trisomies 21, 18 and 13.

What is the difference between Basic and Advanced NIPT?

Advanced NIPT includes screening for trisomies 21, 18 and 13 plus sex chromosome aneuploidies.

What does the Extended NIPT include?

Extended NIPT includes screening for trisomies 21, 18 and 13, sex chromosome aneuploidies and six microdeletions.

It costs £495.

Is Extended NIPT automatically better?

No. Screening for more conditions does not automatically make a test more appropriate for every patient. Screening performance and interpretation differ between conditions, particularly for rarer conditions.

Can I speak with a doctor before choosing?

Yes. Our NIPT pathway begins with a free GP consultation specifically so that you can understand your options before deciding.

Do I need a scan?

Not necessarily. This depends on the information already available about your pregnancy and gestation and your individual circumstances.

Can the blood collection happen at home?

Yes. Your NIPT kit is sent to your home and we arrange for a third-party mobile phlebotomy professional to collect your blood sample.
