How NIPT Testing Works
From Your Free GP Consultation to Your NIPT Results
NIPT non-invasive prenatal testing is a blood test used during pregnancy to screen for the chance of certain chromosomal conditions.
Our London NIPT service is designed to make the process straightforward while providing clinical support from the beginning.
Your journey starts with a free GP consultation. You can speak with a doctor about your pregnancy, gestation and testing options before deciding whether you would like to proceed.
If you go ahead, we complete the necessary paperwork, send your NIPT collection kit to your home and arrange for a third-party mobile phlebotomy professional to collect your blood sample at home.

What Is NIPT?
NIPT stands for non-invasive prenatal testing.
During pregnancy, fragments of cell-free DNA originating mainly from the placenta circulate in the mother’s bloodstream.
NIPT analyses this DNA from a maternal blood sample to estimate the chance that the pregnancy is affected by certain chromosomal conditions.
The principal conditions commonly screened for include:
-
Trisomy 21 — Down syndrome -
Trisomy 18 — Edwards syndrome -
Trisomy 13 — Patau syndrome
Depending on the NIPT selected, additional screening may also be available.
Because the test requires only a maternal blood sample, it is described as non-invasive.
NIPT is, however, a screening test and not a diagnostic test. It estimates the chance of certain conditions rather than providing a definitive diagnosis.
Which NIPT test should I choose?
Why Do We Start With a Doctor?
It is possible to think of NIPT as simply another blood test, but there are several questions that may need answering before testing:
-
Are you far enough into the pregnancy to test? -
Are your pregnancy dates sufficiently reliable? -
Do you need an ultrasound first? -
Which NIPT option is appropriate?
-
What does the test actually screen for? -
What are the limitations of NIPT? -
What could different results mean?
Our service therefore begins with a free GP consultation rather than simply sending you a testing kit.
You can understand the process and ask your questions before deciding whether to proceed.
That is why our home-testing service starts with a doctor rather than a testing kit.

How Does Our NIPT Service Work?
We have designed our service around a simple doctor-led pathway.
Step 1
Book Your Free GP Consultation
The first step is to book a free consultation with one of our GPs.
This gives you an opportunity to speak with a doctor before ordering your test.
We will ask about your pregnancy, gestation and relevant medical information and answer any questions you may have about NIPT.
There is no charge for this initial consultation and no obligation to proceed with testing.
Step 2
We Confirm When You Can Test
NIPT can generally be performed from 10 weeks of pregnancy, depending on the particular test and your individual circumstances.
Before arranging your blood collection, we therefore need appropriate information about your gestation.
If you already have reliable pregnancy dating information, it may not be necessary to arrange another ultrasound purely for NIPT.
If your dates are uncertain, or there is another clinical reason why an ultrasound may be appropriate, your GP can discuss this with you.
Step 3
Choose Your NIPT Test
There are different NIPT testing options available.
The screening included varies between tests, so we do not expect you simply to choose a test from a list without understanding what you are purchasing.
During your consultation, we can explain the available options, what they screen for and their costs.
You can then decide whether you would like to proceed and which option you prefer.
Step 4
We Complete Your NIPT Paperwork
If you decide to proceed, we arrange the necessary testing documentation and take the details required by the laboratory.
We will also send you an invoice for your chosen NIPT test.
Once everything is in place, we arrange the next stage of your home-testing service.
Step 5
Your NIPT Kit Is Sent to Your Home
Your NIPT blood-collection kit is sent to your home.
The kit contains the materials required for the blood sample to be collected and processed for the laboratory.
You therefore do not need to travel across London simply to collect a testing kit.
Step 6
Your Blood Is Collected at Home
We arrange for a third-party mobile phlebotomy professional to attend your home to collect your blood sample.
This is one of the major advantages of our home-testing model.
Rather than travelling to a clinic for a blood draw, the blood collection comes to you.
Step 7
Your Sample Goes to the Laboratory
After collection, your blood sample is sent for laboratory analysis.
The laboratory analyses the cell-free DNA within the sample in accordance with the NIPT selected.
Occasionally, a sample may not produce a reportable result on the first attempt. If this happens, the appropriate next steps will depend on the circumstances and can be discussed with you.
Step 8
You Receive Your NIPT Results
When your laboratory report is available, your results are communicated securely.
The report will explain the screening result for the conditions included within your particular NIPT panel.
If a result requires further discussion, appropriate clinical support can be provided.
A higher-chance NIPT result is not itself a diagnosis and would normally require appropriate specialist discussion about further assessment and possible diagnostic testing.
When Can NIPT Be Done?
NIPT can generally be performed from 10 weeks of pregnancy, subject to the particular test and individual circumstances.
Testing too early may affect the ability to obtain an adequate amount of cell-free DNA for analysis.
That is why establishing gestation is an important part of arranging the test.
Your GP will discuss this with you before your home blood collection is organised.
If your dates are uncertain, or there is another clinical reason why an ultrasound would be appropriate, we can discuss this with you before testing.
Do I Need a Scan Before NIPT?
Not necessarily.
If you already have reliable information confirming your pregnancy and gestation, another ultrasound may not be required simply because you are having NIPT.
In other circumstances, an ultrasound may be useful or clinically appropriate before testing.
We assess this individually rather than automatically requiring every patient to have a scan.
How Accurate Is NIPT?
NIPT is a highly effective screening method for the common trisomies, particularly trisomy 21.
However, no screening test is 100% accurate, and performance varies according to the condition being screened for, the particular test used and individual circumstances.
NIPT should therefore not be interpreted as a definitive diagnosis.
A higher-chance result may require confirmation through diagnostic testing following appropriate specialist counselling.
Your GP can explain the distinction between screening and diagnosis before you decide whether to proceed.
Our Patient Review

I was understandably very worried and was able to book an appointment within just a couple of hours. From the moment we met him, Dr Mac Sweeney was kind, reassuring, professional and genuinely caring. He took the time to listen, explained everything clearly, and made us feel that my husband was in very safe hands.
What impressed me most was that his care did not stop when we left the consultation. He followed up on several occasions to check on my husband's progress, prescribed more medicine and even went out of his way to provide a letter for our insurance company, which was incredibly helpful.
In a world where good service can sometimes feel hard to find, Dr Mac Sweeney demonstrated a level of compassion and personal attention that was truly exceptional. The fee was also very reasonable, especially given the time, care and support we received.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr Mac Sweeney to anyone needing medical assistance and will always be grateful for the kindness he showed to both of us. If I lived in London I would most certainly subscribe to his membership scheme so he could deal with all my family's medical needs.

The clinic has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, with a fresh, calming scent that immediately creates a welcoming environment. Everything was explained clearly and professionally, making the whole experience completely stress-free.
I particularly appreciated the expert advice and felt comfortable throughout. I would highly recommend The Blackheath Clinic to anyone looking for a professional, patient-focused service.

As I entered the tastefully curated space, I encountered one of the rarest of things: a polite, smiling and genuinely welcoming receptionist. In fact, she was so warm and courteous that I briefly wondered whether I had wandered into an upmarket spa by mistake.
Then I met Dr Sweeney. He was charming, courteous, friendly and thoroughly professional, with the kind of bedside manner that reminds you what general practice can be at its best: attentive, humane and quietly confident. He came across as someone who takes real pride in his work and genuinely cares for his patients.
The whole experience felt like stepping back into a time when patients were warmly received and doctors truly doctored. As I was leaving, Dr Sweeney mentioned that he was off on a home visit. A GP doing a home visit in 2026? I was so astonished I nearly needed examining all over again.
Join this practice quickly before word gets out and the list fills up. This is care delivered by people who genuinely care, and that feels all too rare these days

I had lip filler and RRS Long Lasting skin boosters, and she took the time to explain everything clearly, answer all my questions, and ensure I felt confident about the treatments. Her attention to detail and gentle approach really stood out, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
Dr Micha Plugaru truly combines expertise with a warm, personal touch. I would highly recommend her to anyone considering aesthetic treatments — you’re in the safest and most caring hands.
