Private Early Pregnancy Scans at London Bridge
The early weeks of pregnancy can be exciting, but they can also bring considerable uncertainty. Our Early Pregnancy Reassurance Scan is designed to provide clear information and reassurance during the first trimester in a calm, professional medical setting.
Our London Bridge clinic is located at The News Building, 3 London Bridge Street, immediately beside London Bridge Station and The Shard, making it particularly convenient for patients living or working in central London.
Whether you have experienced symptoms that are causing concern, are waiting between NHS appointments, have previously experienced pregnancy loss, or simply want reassurance about how your pregnancy is progressing, our experienced sonographers will take the time to assess your pregnancy and explain the findings clearly.
Our private scans work alongside NHS maternity care and do not replace routine NHS screening scans.
Early Pregnancy Scans From 6 Weeks
We offer early pregnancy scans from approximately 6 weeks of pregnancy.
At this stage, ultrasound may allow us to confirm that the pregnancy is developing within the uterus, assess gestational age and identify fetal cardiac activity when this is clinically visible.
If you are uncertain about your dates, our team can advise you about the most appropriate time to arrange your appointment.
What Does an Early Pregnancy Scan Check?
Your early pregnancy scan will assess the key features that can be evaluated during the early stages of pregnancy, including:
Where possible, images will be provided and the findings of your scan will be explained to you at your appointment.
Early Pregnancy Reassurance
There are many reasons why patients choose to have an early pregnancy scan.
You may simply want reassurance before your routine NHS scan. Alternatively, you may have experienced a previous miscarriage, undergone fertility treatment, be uncertain of your pregnancy dates or have symptoms such as light bleeding or discomfort that have understandably caused concern.
Our aim is to provide an unhurried assessment, explain what we can see and answer your questions.
If the findings require further medical assessment, we will explain this clearly and advise you about appropriate NHS Early Pregnancy Unit, maternity or specialist follow-up.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your scan will be performed by an experienced HCPC-registered sonographer.
Early pregnancy ultrasound may be performed abdominally or, particularly during the earliest stages of pregnancy, transvaginally where this is clinically appropriate and provides better visualisation. This will always be discussed with you beforehand.
Partners are welcome to attend.
During your appointment, your sonographer will explain the images and findings to you and there will be time to ask questions.
Where possible, you will receive images from your scan together with a written summary or report.
Our Patient Review

I was understandably very worried and was able to book an appointment within just a couple of hours. From the moment we met him, Dr Mac Sweeney was kind, reassuring, professional and genuinely caring. He took the time to listen, explained everything clearly, and made us feel that my husband was in very safe hands.
What impressed me most was that his care did not stop when we left the consultation. He followed up on several occasions to check on my husband's progress, prescribed more medicine and even went out of his way to provide a letter for our insurance company, which was incredibly helpful.
In a world where good service can sometimes feel hard to find, Dr Mac Sweeney demonstrated a level of compassion and personal attention that was truly exceptional. The fee was also very reasonable, especially given the time, care and support we received.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr Mac Sweeney to anyone needing medical assistance and will always be grateful for the kindness he showed to both of us. If I lived in London I would most certainly subscribe to his membership scheme so he could deal with all my family's medical needs.

The clinic has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, with a fresh, calming scent that immediately creates a welcoming environment. Everything was explained clearly and professionally, making the whole experience completely stress-free.
I particularly appreciated the expert advice and felt comfortable throughout. I would highly recommend The Blackheath Clinic to anyone looking for a professional, patient-focused service.

As I entered the tastefully curated space, I encountered one of the rarest of things: a polite, smiling and genuinely welcoming receptionist. In fact, she was so warm and courteous that I briefly wondered whether I had wandered into an upmarket spa by mistake.
Then I met Dr Sweeney. He was charming, courteous, friendly and thoroughly professional, with the kind of bedside manner that reminds you what general practice can be at its best: attentive, humane and quietly confident. He came across as someone who takes real pride in his work and genuinely cares for his patients.
The whole experience felt like stepping back into a time when patients were warmly received and doctors truly doctored. As I was leaving, Dr Sweeney mentioned that he was off on a home visit. A GP doing a home visit in 2026? I was so astonished I nearly needed examining all over again.
Join this practice quickly before word gets out and the list fills up. This is care delivered by people who genuinely care, and that feels all too rare these days

I had lip filler and RRS Long Lasting skin boosters, and she took the time to explain everything clearly, answer all my questions, and ensure I felt confident about the treatments. Her attention to detail and gentle approach really stood out, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
Dr Micha Plugaru truly combines expertise with a warm, personal touch. I would highly recommend her to anyone considering aesthetic treatments — you’re in the safest and most caring hands.

What This Scan Does Not Replace
An early pregnancy reassurance scan does not replace routine NHS maternity care or NHS screening.

12-week dating and screening scan -
20-week anomaly scan
If your scan identifies something requiring further investigation, your sonographer will explain the findings and advise you regarding appropriate follow-up.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
We generally recommend an early pregnancy scan from approximately 6 weeks. Scanning significantly earlier may not provide sufficient information to confirm normal early development.
Fetal cardiac activity can often be identified from around 6 weeks, although this varies depending upon the precise gestational age and individual pregnancy. If it is too early to obtain definitive findings, a repeat scan may sometimes be recommended.
Yes. Where appropriate, measurements obtained during ultrasound can be used to estimate gestational age and provide an estimated due date.
An early pregnancy scan can usually establish whether there is a single or multiple pregnancy once the pregnancy has developed sufficiently for this to be visualised.
Yes. In very early pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound may provide clearer images than an abdominal scan. Your sonographer will explain this and obtain your consent before proceeding.
Yes, an ultrasound can be helpful in assessing a pregnancy where there has been bleeding or discomfort. However, ultrasound is not an emergency service. Heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting or feeling significantly unwell require urgent medical assessment.
A comfortably full bladder can sometimes improve visualisation during an abdominal early pregnancy scan. We will advise you of any preparation required when your appointment is arranged.
