What Is an AFC Scan?
AFC stands for antral follicle count.
Antral follicles are small, fluid-filled follicles that develop within the ovaries. They can be seen and counted during a pelvic ultrasound.
The total number of visible antral follicles across both ovaries provides an ultrasound-based estimate of ovarian reserve.
An AFC scan may be performed as an individual test or combined with an AMH blood test as part of a more comprehensive ovarian reserve assessment.
How Does an AFC Scan Assess Ovarian Reserve?
Ovarian reserve refers to the approximate number of eggs remaining within the ovaries.
An AFC scan does not count every egg. Instead, it counts the small follicles visible at the time of the ultrasound.
The number of antral follicles may provide useful information about ovarian reserve and how the ovaries could respond to stimulation during fertility treatment.
However, the follicle count must be interpreted alongside factors such as:
