Seeing your baby’s face for the first time can be one of the most memorable moments of pregnancy.

Our 3D/4D Baby Scan provides detailed three-dimensional images and real-time 4D views of your baby in a calm, private and unhurried environment.

Rather than treating the appointment as simply an entertainment scan, your examination is performed by an experienced diagnostic sonographer within a doctor-led medical clinic.

We begin with a brief wellbeing assessment before concentrating on obtaining the best possible 3D/4D images of your baby.

Our London Bridge clinic is located at The News Building, 3 London Bridge Street, immediately beside London Bridge Station and The Shard.

When Is the Best Time for a 3D/4D Baby Scan?

We offer 3D/4D Baby Scans from approximately 24 weeks of pregnancy.

For many parents, the period between approximately 26 and 30 weeks provides an excellent balance between developed facial features and sufficient space and amniotic fluid around the baby to obtain good images.

Scans can also be performed later in pregnancy, although image quality increasingly depends upon your baby’s position, placental location and the amount of space available.

If you are unsure when to arrange your scan, please contact us and we can advise you based upon your gestation.

I cannot thank Dr Mac Sweeney enough for the care and support he gave my husband when he became seriously ill while we were away from home in London.
I was understandably very worried and was able to book an appointment within just a couple of hours. From the moment we met him, Dr Mac Sweeney was kind, reassuring, professional and genuinely caring. He took the time to listen, explained everything clearly, and made us feel that my husband was in very safe hands.
What impressed me most was that his care did not stop when we left the consultation. He followed up on several occasions to check on my husband's progress, prescribed more medicine and even went out of his way to provide a letter for our insurance company, which was incredibly helpful.
In a world where good service can sometimes feel hard to find, Dr Mac Sweeney demonstrated a level of compassion and personal attention that was truly exceptional. The fee was also very reasonable, especially given the time, care and support we received.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr Mac Sweeney to anyone needing medical assistance and will always be grateful for the kindness he showed to both of us. If I lived in London I would most certainly subscribe to his membership scheme so he could deal with all my family's medical needs.

We had a wonderful experience with Lydia at the Blackheath Clinic for a 3D/4D scan of our baby. She knew exactly what to do to help get our baby in a good position for us to see his face and we were blown away by the photos she gave us. A really moving experience in a beautiful, calm clinic

This is healthcare as it should be delivered. If life has left you weary and nostalgic for days gone by, book your next GP appointment at Blackheath Clinic.
As I entered the tastefully curated space, I encountered one of the rarest of things: a polite, smiling and genuinely welcoming receptionist. In fact, she was so warm and courteous that I briefly wondered whether I had wandered into an upmarket spa by mistake.
Then I met Dr Sweeney. He was charming, courteous, friendly and thoroughly professional, with the kind of bedside manner that reminds you what general practice can be at its best: attentive, humane and quietly confident. He came across as someone who takes real pride in his work and genuinely cares for his patients.
The whole experience felt like stepping back into a time when patients were warmly received and doctors truly doctored. As I was leaving, Dr Sweeney mentioned that he was off on a home visit. A GP doing a home visit in 2026? I was so astonished I nearly needed examining all over again.
Join this practice quickly before word gets out and the list fills up. This is care delivered by people who genuinely care, and that feels all too rare these days

I had such a wonderful experience with Dr Micha Plugaru. From the moment I walked in, she made me feel completely at ease. She is incredibly professional, kind, and genuinely caring, which made the whole experience so comfortable and reassuring.

I had lip filler and RRS Long Lasting skin boosters, and she took the time to explain everything clearly, answer all my questions, and ensure I felt confident about the treatments. Her attention to detail and gentle approach really stood out, and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

Dr Micha Plugaru truly combines expertise with a warm, personal touch. I would highly recommend her to anyone considering aesthetic treatments — you’re in the safest and most caring hands.

What Can You See on a 4D Baby Scan?

Unlike conventional 2D ultrasound, 3D ultrasound creates three-dimensional images of your baby, while 4D ultrasound shows these images moving in real time.
Depending upon your baby’s position, you may be able to see:
  • Your baby’s face and facial features
  • Hands and feet
  • Yawning and stretching
  • Smiling or other facial expressions
  • Hands moving towards the face
  • General fetal movements
Every baby is different, and image quality depends heavily upon fetal position and other factors.
We will always prioritise appropriate and responsible ultrasound examination rather than prolonging a scan purely to obtain a particular image.

A Bonding Scan Designed to Feel Special

A 3D/4D scan is often chosen for a different reason from routine medical pregnancy ultrasound.

It provides an opportunity to spend some time simply seeing your baby.

We therefore want the appointment to feel relaxed rather than rushed.

Your partner is welcome to attend, and close family members may also be able to join you subject to clinic arrangements.

The scan is displayed on a large viewing screen so that everyone attending can share the experience.

3D/4D HD Live Ultrasound

Our ultrasound equipment allows us to produce 3D, 4D and HD Live images where technically possible.

Traditional 3D ultrasound provides a three-dimensional still image.

4D ultrasound adds movement, allowing you to see your baby moving in real time.

HD Live technology can provide enhanced rendering of the baby’s surface and facial features, producing particularly detailed images when fetal position and visibility are favourable.

What If My Baby Is Hiding?

Babies don’t always cooperate with ultrasound appointments.

Sometimes your baby may be facing away from the ultrasound probe, have their hands across their face or simply be in a position that makes obtaining clear facial images difficult.

Your sonographer may ask you to change position or move around briefly to see whether your baby changes position.

However, clear facial images can never be guaranteed, because the quality of 3D/4D ultrasound depends upon factors including fetal position, gestational age, placental position and amniotic fluid.

We will always explain honestly what can and cannot be visualised during your appointment.

Does a 3D/4D Scan Replace My NHS Pregnancy Scans?

No.

A private 3D/4D Baby Scan is an additional pregnancy scan designed primarily for bonding and enhanced visualisation.

It does not replace routine NHS maternity care, including your NHS dating/screening scan or your 20-week anomaly scan.

If anything unexpected is identified during your examination, your sonographer can explain the finding and advise you about appropriate maternity or specialist follow-up.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to have a 3D/4D baby scan?

We offer 3D/4D scans from approximately 24 weeks. Many parents choose 26–30 weeks, when facial features are well developed while there is often still sufficient space to obtain good views. Your existing Blackheath page uses the same general timing guidance.

Is a 3D/4D baby scan safe?

3D and 4D imaging use ultrasound rather than ionising radiation. Your scan is performed by an experienced diagnostic sonographer using appropriate ultrasound techniques and exposure principles.

What’s the difference between 3D and 4D ultrasound?

3D ultrasound produces three-dimensional still images of your baby. 4D ultrasound displays three-dimensional images continuously, allowing you to see movements and expressions in real time.

Will I definitely see my baby’s face?

We will make every reasonable effort to obtain good facial images, but this cannot be guaranteed. Image quality depends upon your baby’s position, gestational age, placenta, amniotic fluid and other technical factors.

Can my partner come with me?

Yes. Partners are very welcome. Please contact the clinic if you would like to bring additional family members so that we can advise about arrangements.

Will I receive pictures?

Yes, we will provide images where possible. Video may also be available depending upon the examination and image quality.

Is there a wellbeing check?

Yes. A basic wellbeing assessment is performed before concentrating on the 3D/4D bonding images. This is not, however, a substitute for an anomaly scan or comprehensive assessment of fetal anatomy.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book a private 3D/4D Baby Scan directly with the clinic.
